B.Sc.(Hons.) - Food technology

A Bachelor in Science in Food Technology is a three year degree programme. This bachelor course in food technology involves all aspects of food science including production, processing and distribution. The purpose is to better comprehend food processes and finally improve food products for the general public.

Programme Learning Outcome (PLO)

  • PLO1:Knowledge of basic sciences: Students have the basic knowledge of environmental science, chemistry, biology and understand its applicability or correlate these sciences to nature.
  • PLO2:Problem analysis: Identify, express, analyze the problems related to natural sciences.
  • PLO3:Design/development of solutions: Students will be able to design or generate solutions of common problems of natural science and its output is to improve public and environmental health.
  • PLO4:Modern tool usage: Generate, select, and apply appropriate modern techniques and resources for understanding the concept of natural sciences.
  • PLO5:Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the science to improve the environmental health and aware about the knowledge and need of sustainable development.
  • PLO6:Project management and lab culture: Acquired the skills in handling scientific instruments, planning and performing in laboratory experiments
  • PLO7:Future prospective: After the completion of this course students have the option to go for higher studies i.e., M. Sc and then do some research for the welfare of mankind or prepare for other competitive examination.
  • PLO8:Life-long and interdisciplinary approach of learning: Realized how developments in any science subject helps in the development of other science subjects and vice-versa and how interdisciplinary approach helps in providing better solutions and new ideas for the sustainable developments.

Programme Specific Outcome (PSO)

The aim of this program is to prepare students to take up a career in food industry or research. The course curriculum is designed to strengthen the fundamentals in basic subjects and provide hands on practice in all the disciplines of food technology.

  • PSO1:The students will understand the issues of safety and quality in food production, handling, processing and trade.
  • PSO2:The students will be able to design and implement; Good Hygienic Practices (GHP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP), Quality Management Systems (QMS): ISO 9001, Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS): ISO 22000, Laboratory Management System: ISO 17025 and Retail Standards.
  • PSO3:The students will be able to effectively plan, conduct, report and audit as per the guidelines of the ISO 19011-2002.
  • PSO4:To Undertake Standard Microbiological and Chemical analysis of Food Products.

Program Objectives (PO):

The aim of this program is to prepare students to take up a career in food technology industry or research. The course curriculum is designed to strengthen the fundamentals in basic subjects and provide hands on practice in all the disciplines of food science and technology. The objectives of the course are-

  • PO1: To impart knowledge of various areas related to Food science and technology.
  • PO2: To enable the students to understand food composition and its physicochemical, nutritional, microbiological and sensory aspects.
  • PO3: To familiarize the students about the processing and preservation techniques of pulses, oilseeds, spices, fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, milk & milk products.
  • PO4: To emphasize the importance of food safety, food quality, food plant sanitation, food laws and regulations, food engineer

Eligibility Criteria

Candidate must have passed 10+2 or equivalent system from any recognized Central/ State Board with Physics and Mathematics/Biology as compulsory subject alongwith Chemistry/Biotechnology/Computer Science with minimum aggregate marks of 45% or equivalent grade for GEN/OBC and 40% marks or equivalent grade for SC/ST Category.
