B.Tech. in Biotechnology

B.Tech. (Biotechnology) includes both the biological sciences as well as the engineering aspect of Biotechnology. After the B. Tech. in Biotechnology, students pursue their careers in research organizations, the pharmaceutical industries, research labs, and different academic institutions in India. However, most of the Indian students prefer going abroad to pursue their masters in science or doctorate studies in Biotechnology and allied areas.

Programme Objectives (POs):

The programme has the following specific objectives:

  • To impart elementary knowledge of basic sciences, engineering fundamentals, and communication skills.
  • To explain the core concepts—essential to working of the cell—by teaching courses in cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, etc.
  • To provide quality teaching in the areas of application-oriented courses viz genetic engineering, bioprocess and fermentation technologies, bioinformatics, genomics and proteomics, food biotechnology, Nanobiotechnology, etc.
  • To educate students about the modern theories, concepts, practices, and developments in biotechnology.
  • To develop database management, statistical, and biological sequence data analysis skills in students.
  • To provide students the capability to execute relevant experiments in the industry and academic settings.
  • To give students the competitive edge to establish themselves as ethically and socially responsible professionals in the biotechnology industry.
  • To equip the students with graduate attributes required for job opportunities and challenges of the current and future Biotechnology scenario.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidate must have passed 10+2 or equivalent system from any recognized Central/ State Board with Physics and Mathematics/Biology as compulsory subject alongwith Chemistry/ Biotechnology/ Computer Science/Technical Vocational Subject. Candidate must obtained minimum marks of 45% or equivalent grade for GEN/OBC and 40% marks or equivalent grade for SC/ST Category in the above subjects taken together.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLO):

The science of biotechnology has revolutionized our understanding of the molecular underpinnings of life. It has become possible because of the technological advances made to study cell metabolism, gene function, genome complexity, etc. Modern medicine and agricultural practices have greatly benefitted from these advances, which, in turn, are helping the mankind in countless ways. Our B Tech Biotechnology program opens up a wide range of possibilities for students to learn, understand, and imbibe these concepts and advances, and efficiently utilize them in their workplace. The students will understand the core processes essential to the normal function of the cell

  • The students will comprehend the molecular basis of metabolism and inheritance
  • The students will understand the relevance of biotechnology in agriculture, medicine, environmental sustainability, etc
  • The students will be able to use bioinformatics tools to analysebiological sequence data
  • The students will be able to design, perform, and analyze results of experiments using basic molecular biology, and recombinant DNA technology
  • The students will learn about the modern cutting edge omics technologies
  • The students will develop proficiency with microbial, plant and animal cell culture
  • The students will learn to organize and present research data
  • The students will demonstrate proficiency in laboratory skills in diverse areas of biotechnology ranging from clinical, non-clinical, healthcare, academic and industry settings.
  • The students will be able to take up jobs in not only Biotechnology, but also in health services, pharmaceutical industry, etc
