Overview
The Faculty of Biosciences (FoBS) at Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University (SRMU) was established in 2015 with B Sc (Hons), M Sc and M Phil programmes in Biotechnology. In a very short span of time FoBS achieved many prestigious milestones. It received extramural research grant, published, and continues to do so, in peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals, placement of students in reputed organizations, organized value-added courses, conferences, seminars, workshops and guest lectures by eminent scientists and academicians, etc. The labs are equipped with state of the art instruments, and can be compared with any research lab globally.
The department currently consists of nine regular faculty members, and 20 research fellows. The research expertise includes the field of molecular and cell biology, virology, parasitology, microbiology, neurobiology, plant biology, protein and stress biology, cancer biology and bioinformatics.
The department represents a broad range of research interests with the special emphasis on basic and translational research. The students, staff, and faculty of the department form a very cohesive and interactive group. The department regularly invites renowned scientists from different research streams for seminars and scientific discussions.
Our industrial collaborations bridges the gap between the conventional PhD and shaping professionals for industry, leading them to the opportunities for good jobs in academia, industry and health-care. Thus, the academic and research activities, manifold dimensions for interaction among students, research fellows, faculty members to shape an outstanding cooperative research and training experience as well.

Dr Kumar received his Master of Science in Biotechnology from the Devi Ahilya University, Indore, (India) in 2006 and his PhD in Biotechnology from Department of Gastroenterology, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, India in 2011.
After receiving his PhD he joined Gangnam Severance Hospital, Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the year 2011 and worked for one year. He moved to UNESCO-Regional Center for Biotechnology, Faridabad, Haryana (India) and joined as Postdoctoral Fellow in a DBT-Welcome Trust project in 2012 and worked on “Understanding Salmonella-mediated alternations in host SUMOylation: implications in infection and inflammation”. From here he got trained in infection biology and continued his work in this area.
He joined Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University, Barabanki (UP) as an Assistant Professor in the year 2013 as a founder member of Faculty of Biotechnology. He is currently an Associate Professor and Dean, Faculty of Biosciences, Institute of Biosciences and Technology at the SRMU, Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, India.
Dr. Kumar has received “Outstanding Researcher and Academician Award” twice in 2018 and 2019 from Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University for his best contribution in research and academics. He has also received International Travel Grant from Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) Department of Science and Technology (DST) Government of India, New Delhi (Three times 2010, 2015 and 2018) and from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi in 2010 for presenting his research work at Malaysia, London and Croatia.
He has supervised 12 B Tech, 10 M Sc and one M Phil Biotechnology projects during his career in Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University. Two of his B Tech Biotechnology students have received INSA-Summer Research Fellowship under his direct supervision.
He is the Life Member of “Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), “Society for Biotechnologists (India)”, “Indian Society of Human Genetics”, “National Academy of Biological Sciences”, “Asian Neurogastroenterology and Motility Association”, “Uttar Pradesh Academy of Science”, and “International Society for Development and Sustainability”. He is also the Executive Council Member of “Society for Biotechnologists (India)”.
Dr. Kumar has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed articles, ten book chapters and edited five books for Springer/Elsevier/Bentham. His works have been published in several leading journals including American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Journal of Gastroenterology Hepatology, Digestive Diseases and Science, Clinical Therapeutics, Microbial Pathogenesis, Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility, Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy, etc.
Dr. Kumar is the associate editor of the journals “Current Molecular Pharmacology” and “Current Signal Transduction Therapy” and serves as an editorial board member and reviewer of more than 6 international journals including International Journal of Microbiology Research, Current Biotechnology, Anti-Inflammatory & Anti-Allergy Agents in Medicinal Chemistry, The Natural Products Journal, and Current Molecular Pharmacology.
Dr. Kumar has recently received “Visiting Scientists Fellowship” from “The Indian National Science Academy (INSA)” New Delhi, India. He has active International collaborations from University of Belgrade, Belgrade (Serbia), Jožef Stefan Institute, and Faculty of Biotechnology and Microbiology, University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), and University of Porto, Portugal. He is also working in active collaboration with Department of Gastroenterology, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Department of Microbiology, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, and Center of Biomedical Research, Lucknow and National Institute of Technology, Raipur (Chhattisgarh) India.

Highlights of Department
The department offers well-equipped labs with modernized Equipment. The Department has also established last year additional new labs in the area of Food Science and Technology, Animal Cell culture and Bioinformatics labs. Most of the lectures are taken using LCD projectors. At present, the department is running B Sc (Hons) Biotechnology, B Sc (Hons) Food Technology, M Sc Biotechnology, and PhD Biotechnology programmes where students are being exposed to learning and research in principles. Special efforts are made to help weaker students by arranging special lectures, tutorials, etc. and related study materials are provided in soft or hard copy. The Laboratory is well equipped with all modern biotechnological instruments are maintained and supported by trained faculties & skilled laboratory technicians. The department is having the following instruments for regular practical classes and research purposes. These are Spectrophotometer, Gel Electrophoresis, Centrifuge, Electronic Balance, Spectrophotometer UV-1700, Water Bath, Autoclave, ELISA Reader Microscope, Orbital Incubator Shaker, Electronic Analytical balance, PCR and Bioinformatics etc.
- Well-equipped laboratories including specific labs for Plant Tissue Culture, Microbiology, Molecular Biology.

Research Interests
The department faculty has also been contributing to high-quality research in front line areas of Biotechnology. The Department has collaborated with different national institute namely Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR, Lucknow), Central Institute of Sub-tropical Horticulture (CISH, Lucknow), etc.

The faculty members of the department are excellent teachers and research scientists, and they have published papers in high impact factor peer-reviewed journals, including Digestive Diseases and Science (DDS), Genomics, Clinical Therapeutics, Biomed Pharmacother, Microbial Pathogenesis, Endocrinology, Genome, Diabetes, Journal of Lipid Research, Journal Plant Physiology and American Journal of Physiology Endocrinology and Metabolism etc.
