M.A. (Sociology)

MA in Sociology is a two years full time course that offers an explanation to the basic nature and processes of society and the relationship between society and the individual. This course focuses on how society functions and is organized, and how society impacts and influences individual’s social behaviour, motivation,understanding, social action, and well-being. Basic sociological ideas regarding social relations, social interaction, social structure, social institutions and social change will be examined. Students will be introduced to key issues addressed by contemporary sociologists like class, race, caste, gender,sexuality, religion, globalization, education, health and society, crime, the media and the environment. The knowledge and skills developed in this course will aid students in future studies within a variety of fields and careers at local as well as global level and encourage the development of critical thinking about important contemporary issues.

Objective

The course of M.A. has been designed to help the students to:

  • To equip the students with the skills that will help them to be placed in premier national and international institutions.
  • To acquaint them and enable them apply the theoretical and methodological tools in the analysis, interpretation and improvisation of the socio-cultural situations.
  • To enable them build a value-based competent personality so that they can influence the well-being of their own self and the society at large.
  • To help them observe, understand, interpret and analyse everyday rising societal complications to contribute with a wise solution to our society and nation.

Eligibility Criteria

Graduate in any discipline with minimum 45% marks for general and OBC category and 40% marks for SC, ST category.
