Field Visit/Camp

SURVEY CAMP-2016

Faculty of Civil Engineering

Survey Camp – A Compulsory and Significant Training Course in Civil Engineering:

Faculty of Civil Engineering successfully conducted a six days Survey Camp (from 14th July to 19th July 2016) for B.Tech 2nd year students of Civil Engineering as the compulsory part of the University academic curriculum after completion for their 4th semester. Survey camp was aimed for grooming the students of B. Tech (Civil) by exposure to field conditions, team work and for practicing the surveying equipments on field at larger scale and work on the real time surveying problems. The trip can be broadly categorized as follows:

Field Work:The six days camp was divided into two phase in 1st phase were for field work at Mussoorie, Dehradun and adjoining areas and the 2nd phase was for field work, calculation, result analysis and group discussions. Students were divided into various groups of 6-7 students monitored by concerned faculty. Students performed various practical exercises like traversing, contouring, plane tabling, leveling, mapping of road route at Mussoorie, Dehradun and adjoining areas en-route, which provided them the relevant field exposure to instruments such as compass, theodolite, auto level, total station, GPS, etc.

Calculations and Result Analysis:: After completion of their field work, students were involved in data collection and analysis of the result under the supervision of concerned faculties. The detailed calculation of the readings, their analysis and drawing activities were performed collectively in the evening. Students worked out the land profile, charts, contour maps, etc.

Geological excursion:Students also got exposure to see actual landslides, geological structures like folding, faulting and unconformities, natural streams, waterfalls, road construction on hills, limestone (Karst) topography, natural caves with groundwater seepage and many more. They were also taken to Shahanshahi Ashram from where Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) could be seen. MBT is an important tectonic plate boundary.

Visit to IIRS, Dehradun: The camp also included a visit to IIRS (Indian Institute of Remote Sensing). IIRS under Indian Space Research Organization, Department of Space, Govt. of India is a premier Training and Educational Institute set up for developing trained professionals in the field of Remote Sensing, Geo-informatics and GPS Technology for Natural Resources, Environmental and Disaster Management. The Institute campus also houses the headquarters of the Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and The Pacific (CSSTEAP). It provides support to conduct all its remote sensing and GIS training & education programs at postgraduate level. IIRS conducted a seminar along with visit to its lab facilities for our students of survey camp on 18th July 2016. The seminar was on ‘Use of GIS & RS in field of water resources’.

Enjoyment after work:The students also enjoyed at various tourist spots at Rishikesh, Mussoorie and Dehradun.

Department is thankful to the University for their approval and guidance in conducting this camp successfully. We are also very thankful to our dear students of B.Tech 2nd year for their active participation in the trip and making it successful.

Fieldwork in B.A. - Village Tindola

The students of B.A. (Hons) English went for a field visit to Tindola village.

Fieldwork constitute an important dimension of research. It helps in the better and empirical understanding of the society. The social structure is unfolded via extensive fieldwork methods. As villages form the basis of the Indian society, therefore the comprehensive and grass root understanding of the Indian society is not possible without having an understanding of the villages in India.

Campus Achievements

FACULTY OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

SMART HYBRID DISTRIBUTION GRID on SOLAR, WIND, HYDRO & COMPRESSED AIR ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM

  • A team of students from Faculty of Electrical Engineering have designed and developed a working model, on grid integration of renewable energy resources of Solar, Wind, Hydro & Compressed Air Energy System to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The developed design technology will ensure safe and reliable operation of the future electricity generation systems based on renewable energy resources.
  • The main objective of the project is to demonstrate and encourage integrated power generation technology thereby contributing to the reduction of global Green House Gas (GHG) emissions and improve reliability of such systems in future.
  • The project would have costed around Rs 11 Lacs if developed by industry. However this has been done in house at a total expenditure of Rs 87 thousands only, thus saving considerable amount. This demonstration model will facilitate better learning about Renewable Energy Technology for the students. Project will be included as a lab experiment in the Faculty for B.Tech & M.Tech courses.

Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University Students Group, Designs and Develops a Solar Powered Vehicle using MPPT Battery Charge Controller

Solar powered vehicles available so far make use of roof mounted panels to charge the batteries using pulse width modulation (PWM) charge controllers. Further these are normally limited in capacity when designing a system for higher capacity. These systems also do not maximize the efficiency of battery charging, thus wasting considerable amount of available solar energy. Normal vehicles have a very limited roof space for mounting solar modules. This requires tilting of the photo voltaic panels to maximize the harnessed solar power particularly in the winter seasons. Such a system would require continuous tracking of the sun for maximum utilization of solar energy. In efficient battery charging reduces the total charge of the battery thus shorten the kilometers run.

Students team at SRMU have designed and developed a solar powered vehicle enhancing the kilometers run by continuous replenishment of charge while the vehicle is running, also improves the battery life by continuous controlling the charging current and supplying only when needed, thus preventing over charging which reduces battery life. This effort of the students group in developing an efficient solar power vehicle intended to generate awareness about the environment and also drives home the importance of saving revenue in terms of the fuel imports. In this effort they have put into practice the lessons learnt in the class in achieving a real life goal.

Solar Lawn Mower Designed & Developed by Students of Electrical Engineering Department

In the world today, all machines are designed with the aim of reducing or eliminating green house gas emissions which is the major causes of climate change. This solar powered lawn mower will meet the challenge of environmental production and low cost of operation since there is no cost for fueling. Different designs have been made, each to suit particular need or convenience.

Making a process of grass cutting easier over the years, many individuals have been added modification to the original design speed, efficiency and power of moving machine. Solar powered lawn mower is an improvement on cordless electric lawn mower. It uses only energy from the sun and does not require any external power source that can operate in areas not covered by the electricity service.
